Osteopathic Manipulation Treatments (OMT)
Hands-On Pain Treatment
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or OMT, can be simply described as hands-on care. Our physicians are able to use their trained hands to feel for areas of asymmetry or dysfunction. This allows them to accurately diagnose, treat, and prevent injuries. OMT is the cornerstone of the osteopathic approach to medicine, which focuses on treating the patient as a whole, rather than simply treating a series of symptoms or illnesses. By focusing on the interrelationships of the body’s nerves, muscles, and bones, our physicians not only diagnose injuries, but also promote the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
At Progressive Spine & Sports Medicine we focus on techniques that incorporate your own muscles and ligaments. This is a far more effective treatment for pain, compared to the common practice of applying forceful correction – which may provide short term relief, but little long term improvement.
The OMT treatments we utilize as part of your customized pain management program may incorporate some or all of the below practices:
Strain-Counterstrain involves identifying tender points and positioning associated joints to decrease the tenderness. The goal of this treatment is to increase range of motion, and decrease muscle spasm and pain.
Myofascial Release focuses on the connective tissue that surround muscles. The physician feels the connective tissue to find areas of tightness and restriction. The tissues are then gently mobilized until they are “released.”
With Muscle Energy, the patient moves a body part against resistance provided by the physician. The goal is to progressively increase the mobility of a joint.
These are just a few of the tools we utilize when we create a comprehensive program to treat your pain.
