Electromyography & Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS)

IDENTIFYING DAMAGE TO MUSCLES AND NERVES

Nerve and muscle testing is performed in two parts. The first part of the test is called a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS or “nerve test”), in which electrical signals are used to stimulate nerves to measure how well these nerves are functioning. The next portion of the test, called electromyography (EMG or “muscle test”), uses a small wire to measure electrical activity in muscles. If abnormal activity is identified in the nerves and/or muscles, it tells us important information about where the problem is, how severe it is, and how long it has been going on.

FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE OF PAIN

Electromyography & Nerve Conduction Studies are considered an objective standard in identifying nerve and/or muscle damage, and can help detect injury due to:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Neuropathy
  • Radiculopathy or “pinched nerve” in the neck or back
  • Sciatica

At Progressive Spine & Sports Medicine, we conduct these beneficial tests in-house, and use the data to determine the root cause of your pain. We then create a customized treatment plan and track your progress as we work to eliminate your pain.
