Video Transcript | Are Stem Cells The Future of Pain Management?
Dr. Who: Where you see the future of pain management as it pertains to stem cells?
Dr. Kevin McElroy: So It’s one of the main tools in our chest to try to help patients who are struggling with narcotics or potentially could be going down that road. If you follow that typical care path that we talked about before with physical therapy as your first option. Some patients don’t respond and their injuries linger. So, traditionally you’re left with surgery or medications at that point, assuming you can’t get better with physical therapy and injections. So, many people are afraid, and rightfully so, of surgery that the outcome not always guaranteed. They would rely on medications – whether they be narcotics or anti-inflammatory – but medications with side effects. Stem Cells offer the potential to actually heal your injury without surgery. So, these cells can grow into any tissue in the body, that’s what makes them so interesting. So, if it’s a meniscus tear or a rotator cuff injury. Simply with an injection, you could potentially regrow the tissue that has been damaged. That’s why they are so exciting for more serious diagnoses – cancer, diabetes, spinal cord injuries – cause they have that potential once we’re really able to bring it out in them
