Video Transcript | Your Leg Pain Could Be Caused By Vascular Issues

Dr. Kevin McElroy: So, something we started doing recently that’s really exciting to our patients is treating symptoms in the legs: cramping, pain, burning, tingling. A lot of times it’s attributed to the back, and a spine issue, but many times we found it’s more of a blood flow situation

Dr. Who: Really?

Dr. Kevin McElroy: yeah, a vascular problem. And, you know, three or four years ago the treatments for that were either these horribly compressive, uncomfortable stockings that you had to wear all the time or a really barbaric surgeries like vein stripping were you would strip the veins out of their legs. Yea, so now what we do is simply with ultrasound, we’re able to diagnose where the problem is. Then using a small catheter that gets inserted through the skin, just with a needle, so there’s no incisions, no surgery, no sutures afterward. That catheter goes into the vein that’s affected, gets heated up by a radiofrequency probe and that closes the vein. What that does is reroutes the blood supply back to the good functioning veins. So, within a few days of that procedure, you have symptomatic relief, it helps cosmetically with varicose veins and spider veins. Patients are thrilled [because] before they were presented with, really, options that were not acceptable to them, but now they have a simple, same-day treatment option

Dr. Who: What’sThis Called?

Dr. Kevin McElroy: So, Its varicose vein Radiofrequency ablation

Dr. Who: Okay, and Ablation stands for?

Dr. Kevin McElroy: Ablation is the heating up part of the process. – You know It’s covered by insurance because of the symptomatic improvement that comes along with it. There’s no need for medications, all those compressive dressings and its really a definitive treatment for it.

Dr. Who: What’s the downtime of the patient?

Dr. Kevin McElroy: [there’s] one day of the procedure. Yea, they have, it’s done in the office with no anesthesia, just local anesthesia, and the next day they’re back to work.

Dr. Who: So they can walk on it?

Dr. Kevin McElroy: Yea, yea, you walk in, you walk out and drive yourself home

Dr. Who: That’s pretty easy. And the success rate on it?

Dr. Kevin McElroy: It’s very good, 90%!
